I grew up riding on motorcycles for years I wore just a blue jean jacket, jeans and runners until one day a friend of mine was in a near fatal collision on his motorcycle. That changed my attitude about what I should be wearing on a bike.
One of the scariest things to see on the highway today is somebody riding a motorcycle and only wearing shorts, a T-shirt and running shoes. They could be the best motorcycle rider in the world but if another motorist isn't watching them all it takes is a split second when you could easily be thrown from your bike. If you're unprepared without the proper riding gear it could cost you several layers of skin or even your life. You see, wearing a leather jacket, leather gloves, chaps and proper riding boots is not just for bikers it's a safety precaution.
One of my friend's found out even with the right gear on you still can lose your skin sliding down the road when he fell off his motorcycle by the actions of a careless driver.
Being a motorcycle rider you don't have anything between you and the pavement or another vehicle. Riding a motorcycle you are vulnerable to everything from the weather, other drivers and even animals. Your bike has no safety features during an accident.
After my friend's accident I realized his injuries could have been a lot worse without his leathers. If you really think about it his jacket, gloves and chaps protected his body like a second skin. Even though his gear was really torn up he survived with his skin just scraped a bit. If he would not of had his motorcycle jacket, leather gloves, and riding boots he may not have saved his skin.
During my motorcycle training course
These days manufacturers of motorcycle apparel are making jackets and pants with zippered linings and for elbows and knees they have pads sewn in. Most motorcycle injuries occur below the waist which means your legs and feet are first to hit the road so having good riding boots and chaps or leather riding pants are a good idea. As with my friend that is where he suffered most of his injuries because he was not wearing chaps.
One of my pet peeves when riding is when a vehicle in front of you intentionally decides to do a burn out and sends stuff flying backwards hitting you everywhere. Now with a good leather jacket, gloves, chaps and most important a full face helmet that debris will not cause a lot of pain on your bare skin.
More people are starting to buy at least one good pair of leather motorcycle pants,
